Casula’s Linda Larrea is the 2015 NSW State Women’s “Minor” Snooker Champion following the successful staging of this year’s event at Club Toukley RSL.

Linda has been a keen snooker player for several years now but, like many players, had never actually experienced the thrill of reaching a snooker final before.  However, all that changed over the weekend of 13th – 14th June following her come-out performance in the time-honoured State Championship.

Larrea played very consistently throughout, displaying solid all round skills and thoroughly deserved her spot in the final.  She was one of three players to win 3 out of 4 games through the round robin stage and then survived a tense semi-final struggle which went down to the black ball in the deciding frame.

Whilst understandably nervous, Linda did not let the occasion of her first Final get the better of her and she went on to record a comfortable 2-0 victory over a gallant Donna Crouch.  Only then did she allow her emotions to overflow and shed some “happy tears” with her fellow players in what was a popular result.

Many thanks to all concerned at Club Toukley RSL, with 2015 marking the 7th consecutive year that the Women’s ‘Minor’ Snooker has been hosted and sponsored by this particular club.  The club remains a great supporter of our sport at all levels.

The Women’s “Minor” Snooker Championship is a traditional stepping stone for women to become more involved in the game at a tournament level.  Unfortunately, a lot of lady players express the opinion that they are “not good enough” to go in tournaments and the ranks of women players are dwindling as a result.  With support and encouragement to try the ‘Minor’ format they soon see it can be a fun experience and not as daunting as first thought.

This was the case once again this year with all players enjoying themselves and the event continuing to prove popular with spectators over the two days of competition. With the assistance of current players and supporters, it remains the aim of the BSA NSW to continually seek and encourage increased participation in women’s snooker.

In this regard, BSA NSW is especially proud and appreciative of the relationship with Club Toukley RSL.  Many thanks once again to the club’s Board of Directors, management, staff and members for their ongoing hospitality and highly valued support.  Special thanks also to the Billiards & Snooker Club committee, President Norm and members.
